|Research has indicated that preadolescent girls identify with the life experiences of the female protagonist characters in contemporary bestselling, young adult fiction books. They dream of lives similar to the characters in the books, and what they dream about affects their perception of self, their social reality, and their formation of a worldview. However, research has not considered the content of bestselling contemporary books that teachers suggest to students and the specific types of messages being sent to girls in literary texts. With a foundation in Gilligan's research on girls' development and Belenky, Clinchy, Goldberger, and Tarule's women's epistemological perspectives research, this study examined the cultural messages of femininity represented in the contemporary bestselling, young adult fiction series Clique and Love, Love, Love. Using content analysis methodology, the messages presented through the life experiences of the female protagonist characters were examined. The results revealed evidence of female objectification and an association between sexual empowerment and self-objectification. A secondary finding showed a link between self-improvement and a desire for male attention-approval. Due to the graphic, sexually-explicit material in the Love, Love, Love series novels, recommendations for further research include a study of the effect of girls' exposure to sexually-explicit material in bestselling young adult fiction series on views about sexuality. The research results can be used for social change by schools and community organizations to work toward modifying the impact of stereotypical ideas about femininity presented in contemporary literature on young girls' development.|--Preliminary page.
